$300,000 in Damages at Belltown Apartment Complex Fire
Seattle Firefighters knocked down a restaurant fire at a Belltown apartment complex which caused a partial evacuation of the 18-story building. A 911 call came in at 10:52 a.m. on January 15, 2012, reporting light smoke on several floors of a residential building at 500 Wall Street. Engine Company 2 and 25 battled the heavy flames and intense heat of the first floor restaurant. It took firefighters 15 minutes to knock down the fire. The smoke for the kitchen rose through the buildings ventilation system causing the buildings alarm to sound. Several dozen residents self evacuated. Since the fire was contained to the first floor, firefighters advised rest of the buildings residents to remain in their units. Heavy fans were brought in to clear out all of the smoke on all 18 floors of the building. A Metro Bus was brought in to provide a warm shelter for the several dozen residents who were kept out of their units for about 90 minutes. Medics transported a 32-year-old female to Harborview Medical Center for minor smoke inhalation. A 103-year-old wheelchair patient on the 16th floor was brought down and treated in an Aid Unit for minor symptoms. Seattle Fire Investigators determined the cause of the fire was electrical originating at an electrical outlet. The damage estimates are $150,000 to the structure and $150,000 to the contents.
