Cause Unknown in Memphis Blaze that Displaced 11

The Memphis Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire at 840 Marianna Street, Sunday, July 22, 2012 at 1:59 a.m. Upon arrival on the scene, firefighters reported fire visible from the one story wood-frame residential duplex. Rescue and Firefighting operations began immediately.

Seventeen (17) pieces of Fire/Rescue/EMS equipment and approximately forty (40) emergency response personnel ultimately responded to the call. Battalion Chief C. Cooper was the commanding officer of this incident. The fire was brought under control at 2:09 a.m. and reported knocked down at 2:10 a.m. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries.

It has not been determined if the residence had a working smoke detector. The structure sustained smoke, fire and water damage. Total damage is estimated at $6,500 structure, $1,200 contents. The origin of the fire was determined to be the storage room area. The cause is inconclusive at this time. Red Cross provided assistance for three (3) adults and seven (7) children.

The Memphis Fire Department urges all citizens to maintain a working smoke detector in their place of residence. Any City of Memphis resident can apply for a free smoke detector by contacting the Fire Museum of Memphis at (901) 636-5650. Always have a plan of escape in case there is a fire.
