Child Playing With Lighter Starts Las Vegas Condo Fire
Las Vegas firefighters responded to the Desert Shores Villas condo complex, 3151 Soaring Gulls Drive (Rampart/Cheyenne) at 5:27 p.m. Saturday, June 23, 2012. On arrival fire was coming out the front door and balcony of an upstairs condo unit in the two story wood frame/stucco building. Firefighters found the front door open and were able to enter the unit and douse the flames in the living room in less than a minute. The fire gutted the living room area of the unit, damaged the balcony and caused heat and smoke damage to the rest of the unit. Damage was estimated at $25,000. None of the other units in the building were damaged. Fire investigators determined the fire was started by a child playing with a lighter. The child does not live at the condo, but is visiting relatives. Another adult was home at the time but was in one of the bedrooms, when the child came and told them the condo was on fire. They tried to put the fire out using a fire extinguisher but were not successful. The fire started on a sofa in the living room Four adults and the young child are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross for temporary housing. There were no reported injuries.
