The Carolina Brotherhood Ride started Monday, July 30, 2012 in honor of an Asheville firefighter, Captain Jeff Bowen, who died last year while on duty at a commercial structure fire.

Riders left from Wilmington and will end in Asheville, averaging 75 miles a day for five days. Wilmington Firefighter Assistant Chief Steve Mason is taking part in the ride along with other firefighters across the state that are on the 400-mile journey to raise money for the family of Captain Bowen.

Wilmington Professional Firefighters Association cooked meals for the riders while they were in town. The Wilmington Police Department and the Wilmington Fire Department escorted riders to the edge of city limits and cheered them on as they made their way towards Asheville.

So far, the group has raised over $30,000 for Bowen's family, and when they ride into Asheville, that family and the rest of his department will be waiting for them. The Carolina Brotherhood plans to make this an annual ride, in memory of fallen firefighters, police officers and paramedics in the Carolinas.
